Using CellRepo solo or in a team

A project is where you group related work in CellRepo.

If you think in lab terms, a project is like: - a research programme, - a study area, - or a shared folder for a team’s work.

It helps you keep repositories organised and makes collaboration easier later.

When to create a new project

Create a new project when:

  • you are starting a new study or line of work
  • you want to separate work by team, client, or collaboration
  • you want to keep internal work separate from external/shared work

If you are unsure, start with one simple project. You can always create more later.

What goes inside a project

A project typically contains:

  • one or more repositories (each repository represents one biological asset)
  • project-level visibility settings (who can see and contribute)

A project is not the asset itself. It’s the container that keeps related assets together.

Steps: create a project

  1. Go to your dashboard.
  2. Find Projects.
  3. Click Create project (or New project).
  4. Give it a clear name.

Good examples: - “CRISPR strain engineering” - “Metabolic pathway optimisation” - “Client A collaboration” - “Lab training sandbox”

Avoid names like: - “Test” - “My project” - “New stuff”

Because those get confusing later.

Choose visibility (simple guidance)

You may see options like private/internal/public, or team visibility.

Here’s the simplest way to think about it:

  • Private / Only me: use this if you are exploring or drafting work
  • Organisation / Lab: use this for normal internal work with your team
  • Shared / External: use this only when you intentionally want outside collaborators involved

If you are unsure, pick the most restricted option now. You can broaden access later.

What to do next

Once your project exists, the next step is to create your first repository:

  • Continue to Create your first repository

That’s where you start tracking a specific biological asset (like a strain or construct).
